Most everyday commercial shipments land somewhere between class 70 and class 150. The extremes, class 50 and class 500, are rare in general LTL freight and show up mostly in specialty commodities.
Calculate density in PCF (weight divided by cubic feet) and find the row that covers your number. That row is your class. A 400 lb shipment in 53.33 cubic feet works out to 7.5 PCF, which lands in the 7 to 8 PCF row, class 125. If your commodity has a specific NMFC item number, check its sub-classes too, since they can assign a different class than the density table alone would give you.
On a typical LTL lane, moving from class 50 to class 100 can triple or quadruple the rate per hundred pounds. Between class 50 and class 300, the multiplier can exceed 10x. For any shipper moving volume, accurate classification and packaging that increases density are among the most direct cost levers available, more direct than negotiating a better carrier discount in most cases.

The 18 classes are 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 77.5, 85, 92.5, 100, 110, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500. Class 50 is the cheapest, densest freight and class 500 is the most expensive, lightest or hardest to handle.
Class 70 applies to freight with a density of 15 to 22.5 PCF. Standard packaged goods, tools and auto parts often fall here, at a moderate rate well below classes like 125 or 200.
Class is the NMFC number assigned to a shipment. It sets the rate per hundred pounds and reflects density, handling requirements and the liability profile of the goods.
