Density is the single number that decides most NMFC freight classes, and it is nothing more than weight divided by volume. If you only have inches, multiply length by width by height and divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet first, then divide weight by that figure. The two fields above do the arithmetic for you the moment you type.

What the result actually means

A PCF number by itself is not very useful. What matters is which row it lands in, because that row is the class your rate is built on. Two shipments that weigh the same but occupy different volumes can land three or four classes apart, and that gap alone can double the per-hundred-pound rate. Reading the density figure as "which row am I in" rather than as a standalone statistic is the fastest way to sanity-check a quote before it comes back from the carrier higher than expected.

Keep in mind this tool answers the density question only. Fragile goods, oddly shaped freight, or commodities with a specific NMFC item number can carry a class that does not match the density table at all, no matter how the math above comes out.

Quick answers on density and class

How do I calculate freight density?

Divide total shipment weight in pounds by volume in cubic feet. The result is pounds per cubic foot, or PCF, which is the number this calculator maps to an NMFC class.

How do I get cubic feet from inches?

Multiply length by width by height, all in inches, then divide by 1,728. A shipment measuring 40 x 48 x 40 inches works out to 44.4 cubic feet, the default volume shown above.

Why does density matter for freight class?

For most general commodities, density is the single biggest input into NMFC class. Denser freight uses trailer space more efficiently, so carriers reward it with a lower class number and a lower rate.

Should the pallet be included in the weight and volume?

Yes. Use the full shipping weight and the outer dimensions of the load as it sits on the truck, pallet and packaging included, not just the product itself.

Is a higher PCF always cheaper to ship?

Usually, but not always. Density sets the general class, while stowability, handling difficulty and liability can still move a specific commodity to a different class regardless of how dense it is.
